Lesson preview · Production Possibilities Curve
Economic Growth and PPC Shifts
~5 min · Free to read
Moving along the curve is one thing. But what if we want MORE of everything? What if a country wants to produce more phones AND more wheat at the same time? That only happens when the entire PPC shifts outward — and that outward shift is exactly what economists call economic growth.
Key Term
Economic Growth
An outward shift of the PPC, meaning the economy can now produce more of both goods than before. Growth expands what’s possible.
What shifts the PPC outward? Three main things: (1) more resources (more workers, more land discovered, more capital), (2) better technology (doing more with the same inputs), and (3) improved human capital (education, training). Trade is different. It doesn’t move the PPC, but by specializing and swapping, a country can consume at a point outside its own curve.
Trap · Warning
A shift vs a movement along the curve
Producing MORE phones and FEWER wheat is a MOVEMENT along the existing curve — just picking a different point. Growth is when the ENTIRE curve moves outward. Don’t confuse these two!
PPCs can also shift inward. War, natural disasters, pandemics, mass migration — anything that destroys resources or disables production — can shrink an economy’s possibilities. Ukraine’s PPC shrank dramatically after 2022. Zimbabwe’s shrank in the 2000s from policy collapse. Growth isn’t guaranteed.

A country discovers a huge new oil field. What happens to its PPC?
Commit to one first. Guessing and being wrong beats reading the answer cold.
Worked Example
For each event, decide whether the PPC (a) shifts outward, (b) shifts inward, (c) causes movement along the existing curve, or (d) leaves the curve in place but moves production to a point inside it:
- A new AI tool doubles productivity in manufacturing
- A country decides to build more schools and fewer highways
- A hurricane destroys 20% of a country’s factories
- A labor strike leaves factories idle for one week
