Perfect substitutes and perfect complements

Two limiting kinds of preference. Perfect substitutes (two brands of the same bottled water) give straight-line indifference curves because you swap at a constant rate. Perfect complements (left and right shoes) give L-shaped curves because an extra unit of one alone adds nothing.
