Giffen good

A rare good people buy more of when its price rises, so its demand curve slopes up. It has to be an inferior good that takes a huge share of a poor household’s budget, so the income effect of the price rise overwhelms the substitution effect. Rice in parts of nineteenth-century China is the classic example.
