Deadweight loss (DWL)

Total surplus that disappears when a market produces more or less than the efficient quantity. It is a loss to buyers and sellers that nobody else gains, shown as a triangle between the demand and supply curves over the missing units.

Also called: DWL, excess burden, welfare loss
