Principal-agent problem

When one person (the principal) hires another (the agent) to act for them but cannot fully watch what the agent does, and the agent’s interests differ. Shareholders and managers, patients and doctors. Contracts that tie pay to results are the usual fix, at the cost of loading risk onto the agent.
